Regular garbage collection services

Garbage bins shall be set out on your property slightly set back from the curb or sidewalk, no sooner than 5:00 p.m. the day prior to the collection. The daily collection will normally start at 6:00 a.m. Garbage must be placed in a designated Town garbage bin placed curbside with the logo towards the street.

Thank you for following these guidelines for regular garbage waste collections :

  • Garbage must be placed in a designated Town garbage bin placed curbside with the lid closed.
  • Garbage bins must be placed on the edge of your property, close to the sidewalk or curb, and 1 m (3 ft) from any other bin or obstacle.
  • Position the bin so that the “Hawkesbury” logo and arrows on the cover point towards the road.
  • Bins must remain at the address to which they were assigned and are the owner’s and the occupants' responsibility. Any damage to bins will be handled case by case.
  • Bins must be stored near residence, or in an appropriate enclosure, cleared of snow and accessible to residents.
  • Any additional garbage bags must be tagged with an "extra garbage bag tag" AND placed alongside the grey garbage bin for collection.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in making our Town more sustainable!

Are you a new resident?

The designated garbage bin must remain with the property to which it was assigned.
  • If you are the owner of a newly constructed house or business, you may obtain a garbage bin at Town Hall at our current cost. Contact us as tp-pw@hawkesbury.ca
  • If you are the new owner of an existing house, it is the responsibility of the previous owner to leave the container with the property.
  • Please note that no other container can be used for the weekly garbage collection.

Need to replace your designated garbage bin?

Be sure to keep your designated garbage bin in good condition.

Please note that if your designated garbage bin is lost, stolen or damaged, you must replace it at our current cost. All broken designated garbage bins must be returned to the Town.

Please contact us at 613 632-0106 or tp-pw@hawkesbury.ca if you wish to purchase an additional designated garbage bin. Note that garbage user fees are calculated per bin, so an additional bin will incur additional costs.

Winter collection instructions

Ways to facilitate waste collection during snow removal operations.

Optimal garbage placement can get tricky in the winter. Here are some reminders about bin placement and ways to facilitate collection and snow removal operations.

  • Keep an area on your property cleared of snow for placing your garbage bin out for collection.
  • If your driveway is very narrow, consider keeping an area of your lawn cleared of snow where you can set out your bins.
  • Do NOT park your car in front of garbage bins set out for collection.
  • Do NOT place your garbage bins on the sidewalk. Sidewalks are plowed in one pass, therefore impediments such as garbage bins slow down snow removal operations significantly. *(see below for certain exceptions)
  • If you must move the garbage bin temporarily to gain access to your driveway, the preferred back-up placement is in the street, as close as possible to the curb.
  • Remember to always have the Town logo on the bin facing the street (the wheels facing the household) and keep at least 30cm (1 ft) clear of obstacles on all sides of the bin.

*Exceptions: Certain sidewalks on sections of Main St E, Cartier Blvd and Lansdowne St are wide enough to accommodate garbage bins while proceeding with snow removal. In these areas, please continue to place your bins on the sidewalk so they are accessible for collection, while leaving 1.5m (5 ft) free of obstacles for the snow plow.

Extra garbage?

What to do with garbage in excess of what fits in your designated garbage bin.

Each household is limited to the volume contained in your designated bin. Any additional bags must be tagged with an "extra garbage bag tag". Extra garbage bag tags are sold at Town Hall (3 for $10).

If a household regularly produces more garbage than the volume contained in their designated bin, they may benefit from an additional garbage bin.  A request for an additional designated garbage bin must be made by the property owner by filling out and submitting this request form. Note that garbage user fees are calculated per bin, so an additional bin will incur additional costs.

Please note that there is no limit to the recycling collection.
