Important Information

  • A marriage licence is required to hold a wedding in the province of Ontario.
  • Non-residents are also able to obtain one and to get married in a municipality in Ontario.
  • The fee for a marriage licence is outlined in Schedule "A" of the Administration Fees By-Law, as amended. The fees are payable in cash or by Interac. 
  • The licence is valid for 90 days.

Obtaining a Marriage Licence

The Application

You must complete and sign the Marriage Licence Application (Form 3), and make an appointment with the Clerk's Office either by phone at 613-632-0106 or by email at infogreffe@hawkesbury.ca 

Proof of Identity

The applicant and co-applicant applying for a marriage licence must present two (2) pieces of identification each at the appointment for the issuance of the licence.

One of the two IDs must be a valid passport or a birth certificate, and the second must be one of the items listed below (with a photo if the other ID is a birth certificate).

Other acceptable proof of identity:

  • Driver's Licence
  • Ontario Photo Card (Purple ID Card) 
  • Canadian Citizenship Certificate
  • United States Green Card
  • Aboriginal Status Card
  • Confirmation of Permanent Residence
  • Nexus Card
  • Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC)
  • Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)

Getting Married After a Divorce

You must provide the original copy or a certified copy of the judgment or divorce certificate from the court where the divorce was granted.
If you do not know which court granted your divorce, you can contact the Central Registry of Divorce Proceedings, or call 1-613-957-4519.

Divorce Outside of Canada

When your divorce was granted outside of Canada, you must obtain authorization from the Registrar General of Ontario before submitting your application.
The following documents must be sent to the Registrar General:

  • Completed and signed Marriage Licence Application Form 
  • Statement of Sole Liability 
  • Letter of Legal Advice: From an Ontario lawyer 
  • The original or a court-certified copy of the divorce judgment or annulment in English or French. If the document is in another language, you will need to include a translated copy and an affidavit sworn by a certified translator.

Civil Ceremony

This service has been offered by the Town since 2022, following the adoption of By-law N° 42-2022. Civil marriage ceremonies are non-religious and last approximately 20 minutes. They are offered in both languages and take place at Town Hall in an intimate setting, perfect for making this moment unforgettable.
Ceremonies outside of Town Hall are also possible.
After a marriage licence is issued, to reserve a ceremony date, a reservation agreement must be signed and the associated fees paid before the ceremony takes place, as stipulated in Schedule "A" of By-law No. 42-2022.
